Benefits of Face Oils and Serums

More and more brands are coming out with “face oils and serums” but what are these new products? Facial oils/serums are a great skincare/beauty staple for anyone whose skin could use a boost of nourishment and can make a remarkable difference for all skin types including dry, flaky, mature, acne prone, and oily skin types. When used daily, facial oil/serums will make your skin feel smoother, softer, and add a natural glow!

What are Face Serums?

Facial oils can include fragrant plant oils (essential oils) and non-fragrant, fatty plant oils (jojoba, avocado, grapeseed, rosehip, etc.)

How do I use Face Oils/Serums?

There are many ways to use a facial oil/serum including under your moisturizer, on its own, as a makeup primer, or blended into your foundation! Facial oils are helpful for keeping skin's vital hydration locked in and they have incredible, instantaneous skin-smoothing properties. It is important to remember that facial oils/serums are not a “one type fits all” and that you should choose a product based on your skincare needs and/or personal needs. Facial oils/serums do not replace other essential skincare products such as a cleanser, toner or moisturizer.

The ingredients that make up a facial oil/serum including the essential oils and non-fragrant plant oils are a rich source of antioxidants and replenishing emollients. The blend of essential oils chosen your for facial oil/serum can also have aromatherapy benefits such as relaxation, anti-stress, energizing effects, etc.

What Face Oils are the best?

Soleluna Cosmetics will be hosting a Facial Oil/Serum workshop on January 21st [Tickets here]. At this workshop you will learn about the uses and benefits of seven common essential oils, the best carrier oils for different skin types and how to create a customized blend that suites your skin needs.

Speaking in more general terms, certain oils work better for you than others. It is important to experiment and see which oils you prefer.

Since starting Soleluna Cosmetics, I've had friends, family and clients ask me endless amounts of questions about skincare and beauty. It challenges me to think creatively and continue my research on how to incorporate natural ingredients into our daily skincare and beauty routines. To spread the wealth of knowledge and for those of you who may have questions, I've decided to launch a monthly Q&A!

Question #1: I'm in my mid twenties - when should I start to use anti-aging products?

Answer: Anti-aging is easy when you take the prevention approach. Everyone should be wearing sunscreen, EVERYDAY. This will be the biggest factor in preventing wrinkles, sun spots and dehydrated skin. Teenagers can begin preventing aging by using skincare high in antioxidants. This will provide your skin with an extra boost to help clear away damaged DNA and eliminate harmful free radicals. Our Antioxidant Punch Serum is perfect for a first time anti-aging product. Keeping a good skincare regime free of cheicals, perfumes and toxic preservatives, will ensure your skin is staying healthy. If you have dry skin - signs of aging may start to appear in your early twenties: fine lines, sun spots and sensitive skin. I recommend using a night cream with lactic acid to to remove dead skin cells and promote healthy regrowth. Our Honey Night Cream has 1% lactic acid, which is the perfect introductory anti-aging product. If you have oily skin - you lucked out in the aging department! Those with oily skin tend to age more slowly, as their sebum keeps the skin soft and supple. If you have oily skin you may be able to get away without anti-aging products until your late twenties, but it never hurts to start early.

Question #2: What's the best way to prevent and heal ingrown hairs?

Answer: For prevention of ingrown hairs there are a few common tips that work well. First, exfoliate your skin once a week. Look for ingredients like white willow bark extract (natural source of salicylic acid), papaya extract, apricot shells, sandalwood powder and colloidal oatmeal. You must remember to exfoliate the areas you are going to be shaving - legs, bikini area, under arms, all of it! Second, it is very important to shave "with the grain", in the direction the hair is growing. This can be hard to follow if you really want that smooth shave, but your skin will thank you! To heal ingrown hairs, massage the area twice a day with an oil such as jojoba - which has antimicrobial and anti inflammatory properties.

Question #3: I have sun spots and acne scarring on my face - is there a good way to minimize the appearence of them?

Answer: Sun spots can be reduced by wearing a zinc oxide containing sunscreen daily. Zinc oxide lightens the skin naturally. With gradual use it will protect the spots from further development and reduce their overall appearance and size. Acne scarring can be healed with essential oils. A blend of jojoba oil, helichrysum essential oil and lavandin essential oil is a powerful trio that with regular use, will reduce acne scars. Contact me to discuss a custom serum for acne scarring -

Question #4: How often should makeup brushes be washed and how often should they be replaced?

Answer: Makeup brushes should be washed after EVERY USE. I know I know, that just doesn't happen. If you are using them everyday - wash at least once a week. If you use them here and there but not daily - you can go every two weeks without washing. Spot washing with alcohol and a papertowel is okay for non-face brushes (eyeshadow brushes). If you use a makeup sponge to apply your base, this must be washed after every use. Sponges are a breeding ground for bacteria! Replacing your brushes should happen every 1-2 years, depending on the quality of the brush. Once the brush is no longer shaped, soft or hairs fall out - it is time to be replaced. Cleaning your brushes with a natural soap like Liquid Castile Soap will extend their lifespan.

Question #5: What is the best natural way to minimize pores?

Answer: This question has a very simple solution. Witch Hazel Distillate. This magical water is a natural astringent - meaning it contracts skin. After applying witch hazel to clean skin, your pores will contract and appear reduced. Pores can never actually become smaller, your pore size is your pore size. However, we can reduce the APPEARANCE of pores, which is what we are really looking to do. Essential oils of Frankincense, Geranium, Juniper Berry and Rosemary are all powerful astringents. They can be added to water (or witch hazel), shooken up and applied to the skin to reduce the appearance of pores. Our Hydrating Lavender Toner is made up of 50% witch hazel and will minimize the appearance of pores.

This fun DIY is simple but luxurious!

Add 6-10 drops essential oil of your choice (recommendations below) to 100 ml distilled water in a glass spray bottle.

Shake every day for 5 days. Always store in a cool, dark place.

On the fifth day, strain the water and oil through a coffee filter. Put the water back into the spray bottle and continue to store in a cool, dark place.

The oil will transfer its aroma and properties into the water. The oil-infused-water can be used as a toner in your skin care routine, a body mist or air an freshener.

My recommendations for essential oils are of the floral variety, but feel free to be as creative as you like.

Rose, Otto

Jasmine, Absolute

Ylang Ylang

Rose Geranium

You can also substitute Witch Hazel Distillate for the distilled water. This will add extra toning and astringent properties to the spray.

I hope your try this at home -- let me know how it works for you in the comments below!

Natural Glow Body Lotion

Today I am participating in the BLO event at Royal Electric! Since I am very very pale I thought I would make a tinted body lotion to give my skin an all over “natural glow”.

I am really pleased with how this turned out!

Using a simple lotion recipe (for 100 g of lotion):

60 g distilled h20

5 g aloe vera juice

5 g rose water

3 g glycerine

10 g safflower oil

5 g fractionated coconut oil

5 g shea butter

5 g e-wax

1 g essential oils of (palmarosa, frankincense, sweet orange, black pepper and coffee)

0.5 g broad spectrum preservative

0.5 g gold mica, earthen mist mica, iron oxides

This lotion is extremely moisturizing and also delivers a very buildable layer of glow. The shimmer is not too obvious unless you really build it up, so it just catches the light perfectly and looks very natural.

I am really happy with this glow-y, bronzing lotion! I want to make more products like this one.

Plus, the smell is so good!

If you’re interested in this product, let me know! I can definitely put it up in the shop :)

Happy weekend all!

October is rushing to an end! I can’t wait for Halloween.

Partially because I have a midterm that morning, that I would like to get over with, and mostly because I love dressing up!

This year I think I am going to be a Deer. I am pretty sure they are my spirit animal, plus it’s a fairly simple (but cute!) costume. I love costumes that are primarily makeup looks -- probably because I love makeup!

Alright, on with the empties. I really don’t use up a lot of different things every month. I make my products in large quantities because I know what I like. This month however, I have come to the end of some of my staples.

White Willow Bark Cleansing Milk

This has been just dreamy! I love how gentle this cleanser is, even with salicylic acid AND lactic acid present. I have this product to thank for deep exfoliation and super soft skin.

Argan Oil Serum

I literally use an ounce of this every month. I have been using the same combination of argan oil, few drops of red raspberry seed oil and vitamin E. My skin has been loving it! This serum is insanely moisturizing but doesn’t leave my skin feeling super oily. Argan oil has actually been helping my acne. I literally rub this stuff into my acne and it heals up so quickly.

Cherry & Carrot Day Cream

I use two pumps of this moisturizer every morning, no matter what. I love having SPF on my skin and this helps lock in moisture all day long. If I don’t have it on, I can tell right away. My skin feels like it’s being sucked dry from the air and I usually get flaking within hours. It takes me a couple of months to go through 30 ml. of this stuff -- even though I’m using it constantly. I did end up finishing up a bottle throughout the month, but of course I refilled it with the same formula right away. This rich hydrating day cream is my everything for keeping moisturized skin throughout the day.

Witch Hazel Toner

This is a new addition to my skincare routine. I have added a second toner into my collection. A toner consisting of mostly witch hazel distillate, some floral waters such as rose, chamomile and lavender and a few drops of tea tree essential oil. I have been using this on a cotton pad and applying it to clean skin. I will use this before my spray-on toner. I then will rub my oil serum into my skin while my skin is still damp. This method has been working great for me. It really preps your skin for makeup well and is extremely hydrating.

That’s it for October Empties! What are you dressing up as for Halloween?
