Mood Changing Oils

By Soleluna Cosmetics, Sep 7 2016 08:28PM

Essential oils are light, small, volatile compounds that evaporate readily at room temperature. They are inhaled and recognized by odour receptors on cilia in our olfactory epithelium. These odour receptors create a signal, carried by olfactory nerves, that reaches the limbic system in our brain. The limbic system is associated with regulating emotions and emotional behaviour, circadian rhythm, fight or flight response and GI functions. It is involved in odour memory and the experiences associated with our specific scents. I encourage you to learn more about the hypothalamus, a component of the limbic system and its regulation of the autonomic nervous system and emotional reactions.

I will now introduce oils that affect our mood in different ways, followed by how to use them safely.

How to use:

AROMATIC

Smell the oil straight from the bottle as needed.

Diffuse the oil in the room with an essential oil steam diffuser.

Add 10 drops to 100 ml water and spray around the room.

Blend several oils together and use smell straight from the bottle or diffuse.

Make a reed diffuser: Add 50 drops essential oil to 50 ml perfumer’s alcohol, add a bunch of bamboo sticks.

TOPICAL

Add 2-5 drops to 10 ml roller bottle (one drop is enough for children under the age of 12, never use essential oils on children under the age of 5). Add carrier oil (fractionated coconut oil, grapeseed oil, jojoba oil) to the bottle. Invert 50 times to mix. Apply to the wrists, top of spine or just smell it straight from the bottle.

INTERNAL

I do not recommend ever taking essential oils internally. It can be very dangerous and should not be done without direct instruction from a licensed physician. The response to essential oils aromatically and topically is much more immediate and effective, there is no reason to take them internally. Essential oils should be considered like a DRUG and children should NOT handle pure essential oil bottles - EVER.
